How spinal cord injuries can completely change people’s lives

On Behalf of | Feb 9, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Different types of injuries affect people’s lives in different ways. Some only cause minor inconveniences for people for a few days while they heal. Others will completely change people’s lives while they heal and in some situations they will permanently change their lives. Spinal cord injuries are usually this more difficult type.

The spine is responsible for sending all the messages from the brain to the body part that is the intended recipient of the message. When the spinal cord is injured those messages do not get through and the body part will not do what the brain is telling it to do. This can lead to many different physical problems and prevent people from doing many different activities they are accustomed to doing. Also, in some situations spinal cord injuries are permanent and people may lose the function of certain body parts for the rest of their lives.

Physical problems caused by spinal cord injuries

Spinal cord injuries can cause paralysis and, depending on where the injury occurs on the spinal cord, people may suffer quadriplegia (loss of use of both arms and legs) or paraplegia (loss of use of just the legs and lower body). Some injuries can be complete, meaning there is no feeling. Others may be incomplete, meaning people still have some feeling and movement. In addition to paralysis people could experience breathing problems and lose control over their bowels as well.

There are many different ways that people can suffer a spinal cord injury. Some of the common causes are falls and motor vehicle accidents, which can be caused by other people’s negligence.

In addition to causing significant physical problems, spinal cord injuries can also cause significant financial problems for people in Maryland as well. The medical bills associated with the extensive medical treatment can be expensive and people may not be able to work and lose income as a result. If other people caused the spinal cord injury though people may be able to receive compensation from them to at least help ease the financial burden. It is important that people receive the compensation they deserve and consulting with experienced attorneys could be beneficial.
